Occlusion and Headaches

Occlusion is the way your teeth fit together, and we think it is vitally important to your long-term dental health. In health we find harmony between the jaw-joints, the chewing muscles, and the occlusion (bite) of the teeth. When harmony is lacking any or all the following can become problems: headaches, toothaches, periodontal (gum and supporting bone) disease, premature wear of teeth, fractured teeth, sensitive teeth, limited opening, popping in the jaw-joints, and joint-dislocation. We treat this disharmony and most people get relief fairly quickly. We use the NTI system to help get rid of the pain and then we work to establish the best occlusion you can have.

Periodontal (Gum) Treatment

Infection in the gums and tooth supporting bone is unfortunately a very common problem. It is by far the most frequent cause of tooth loss. New studies show a sure connection with gum infection and heart trouble. Generally, if you lose bone support for your teeth, it is gone for the rest of your life. For all these reasons we think the treatment and prevention of this disease is important. Our approach is a thorough diagnosis, minimally invasive treatment to turn the tide of the disease process, improve the occlusal forces (bite) on your teeth, local antibiotics like Arestin™, biofilm management, and close monitoring of your body’s response to treatment. If you can work to improve your immune response through stress management, and improvements to your body chemistry you will be doing all you can to engender healing.

Treating Tooth Decay

Decay is an infectious process, with a definite sequence of effects. The effects can vary from demineralization (tooth losing minerals before a cavity forms), to cavities, to infection of the living core of the tooth, to infection of the surrounding bone. It is important for you to understand and have some control over the process before we definitively treat the effects. We know of several factors involved in decay: biofilm (plaque or bacteria) formation on the tooth surface, dietary habits, pH (acidity levels) of the saliva and stress levels. Click for more information on the process of tooth decay.

Treating the effects of decay is important, because it at least retards the process locally and restores normal function and appearance. Only treating the effects with no regard to controlling the process is less than ideal. Treatment depends on the severity of the effects.

For demineralization we would help you with biofilm management, help you get your pH more normal, encourage Xyilitol use, explain what dietary changes you can make, and monitor your progress.

For small cavities we do the same as for demineralization and remove the decay and restore the missing part of the tooth. For small to moderate cavities we restore with composite materials. For intermediate sized cavities we use porcelain. For large cavities we restore the whole outer surface of the tooth with a crown.

Replacing Teeth

When a tooth is lost the adjacent and opposing teeth can shift. This shifting can throw the occlusion (bite) off, and lead to unnecessary gum and decay problems. Replacing missing teeth is vitally important to the longterm health of the remaining teeth, gums, joints, and jaws. We can replace missing teeth by three methods:

Bridges get support for the missing tooth by attaching to the adjacent teeth. Today we can make many bridges from non-metalic materials.

Implants gain support from the jaw-bone just like teeth do.

Removable partial dentures attach to the remaining teeth and gain support from the gum in the areas where teeth are missing.

Improving Your Smile

Whitening teeth has never been easier, at home, in our office, or both.

Have an attractive smile instantly with bonding and porcelain veneers.

We can remove metal fillings and crowns, and replace them with beautiful tooth-colored restorations.

Straightening Teeth

We use the Invisalign™ method to straighten teeth. This means no metal brackets, wires, or bands stuck on your teeth. Most people cannot tell you are having orthodontic treatment.

Alternative Root Canals

Sometimes the living core of the tooth becomes infected and dies. This infection can become serious and contribute to other health problems, so treatment is important. If your immune system is compromised and the infection is large we recommend the removal of the tooth. If your immune system is working well and you want to keep the tooth, we can treat the tooth with a root canal procedure. We do not use the same technique as most offices do; we use calcium oxide paste, also known as “The French Paste”, “Biocalyx”, and its present name, EndoCal. For further information see:
The EndoCal Root Canal, and The International Academy of Oral Medicine & Toxicology
